WHO'S DISCIPLE ARE YOU?
While waiting for a bus I happened to talk with a young man about the work of the Lord, and he said;
1) You can lead someone to Christ, but its of no use unless they become a disciple.
2) All the preaching in the world is of no use unless we make disciples.
3) It is not sufficient to hear the word, they must become doers of the word.
4) He said he was going through a discipleship program with Freddy Garcia.
Our conversation lasted less than a minute. Even so, it was clear that he was certain that what had learned was the only truth.
On praying about this I realized that he had become a disciple on a man not of God.
So today I ask you, "who's disciple are you?" Are you a disciple of man or of God?
If your understanding of truth comes from men, then you will be led a stray, no matter how godly the man.
Rom. 8:14 "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."
So how can this be in the light of:
Eph. 5:21 "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God."
Heb. 13:17 "Obey them that have the rule over you ....
How can we in doctrine be submitted to men and yet led by the spirit?
I believe the key to understanding this is in
I Cor. 11:3-5 "the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man and the head of Christ is God...
The head -- covering is the person we rely on for direction.
If my covering, my direction is Christ, then I will be led by the Holy Spirit. For the Spirit always leads us to Christ and to glorify His name.
This Scripture shows us that in God's intended order there can be no one between a man and Christ. The pastor is not the head of the man, the wife is not the head, a brother or church leader is not the head.
To be in right relation to God, Christ must be the head of every man. And in marriage the man is the head of the woman.
From the Scriptures we have the example of Paul the apostle.
Gal. 1:15-18 "... I went into Arabia and returned again unto Damascus ..."
He searched the Scriptures and listened to the Lord as he showed us in Rom 8:14.
Acts 17:10-11 ...these were more noble than those of Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether these things were so...
They did not rely on what they were told about the Scriptures, they were more noble in that they themselves diligently searched for the truth.
It is therefore clear that every servant of the Lord Jesus Christ must be a true student of God's word and a listener to the Holy Spirit, meditating on the word and
Psalm 1:1-2 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly... But his delight is in the low of the Lord; and in His law does he meditate day and night."
Psalm 63:5-7 "My soul shall be satisfied...when I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches...
I Tim. 4:13-16 "give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine... meditate on these things, give thyself wholly to them, that thy profiting may appear to all...take heed to thyself, and unto doctrine, that you shall both save thyself, and them that hear thee...
Josh. 1:8 "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth: but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous..."
So let us now commit to spend the time each day to search the scriptures and pray for the leading of the Holy Spirit that we may know the truth and setting it in our hearts, that we may do the truth and thereby prosper.
If we will do this then we will indeed be lead by the spirit and we will be the disciples of God.
